What is the difference between primed board material and board material with a paint finish?

The main difference between a primed topcoat and a lacquer film topcoat is the preparation of the surface for painting.

A primed top layer

The name says it all, this material has a primed top layer (primer) that protects the wood and minimises paint absorption. This top coat is specially developed so that you don't need to prime. Therefore, it requires fewer coats of paint for a smooth, finished look than, say, unfinished board material. However, it is important to sand the surface well between each layer. This makes the layers adhere better and you will enjoy your project for an extra long time. When and why do you choose board material with a primed top layer?

  • If you plan to use a matt or silk gloss paint, board material with a primed top coat is a good choice because of the primer already present.
  • If you are looking for a cost-effective sheet material to get your sheet material in the right, matching colour.
  • If you want to save time: the board is already primed, so you can skip the primer layer.

A layer of foil

In addition to board materials with a primed top layer, board materials with a lacquer film have also been developed to serve as a basis for paint finishes. The surface of these board materials is extra smooth and absorbs less paint than standard or primed board materials. This allows paint finishes such as high gloss or silk gloss to be applied more easily and with fewer coats of paint. Because the sheet is coated, it is important to degrease the surface well before painting. When and why do you choose sheet material with a lacquer film?

  • If you aim for a high-gloss paint finish with a mirror-smooth appearance.
  • For projects in rooms with medium humidity, where a water-resistant and durable paint finish is required. Note! Be sure to finish all edges properly with a sealer.
  • If you want to save the time and effort required to apply multiple coats of paint, even compared to a primed topcoat.
